I was very fortunate to have been raised in a loving home by both of my parents.
However, I know that is not the case with so many families.
Over the years, I've had many, many requests to write
Mother's Day and Father's Day poems
that would be suitable for Simplers to give to another loved one
(such as a foster parent, aunt or uncle, grandparent, step parent, etc.)
that provided the loving home and guidance
that an absent birth parent was unable to give.

Therefore, "Upon Your Knee" was written with ALL kinds of parents in mind.

When I was just a little child and sat upon your knee,
You often taught me lessons to guide me to become the person
I should be.

You told me there was hatred
that could consume my every thought.
Yet you showed me that real love could overcome
whatever hatred wrought.

You talked about greed, and spite,
and anger left unchecked.
Yet you showed me how forgiveness
would have a stronger and lasting affect.

You told me that pain and sorrow
could lead to sadness and despair.
Yet you taught me faith and hope and joy
were forces beyond compare.

Who would have thought life's lessons
could be taught upon a knee?
Well, I'm living proof of the love you taught.
Yes, your lessons live through me!
