About two months ago,
I met two women who had each lost her husband within the last year.
As I spoke with them about the sweet memories of their husbands,
it seemed like it was the most insignificant and normal daily activities
-- that most of us take for granted --
that they missed the very most.

These two women were the inspiration for this poem - "My Beloved".


Where do I begin to express the very simple things
I miss so much about you?

The scent of your skin just after a shower.
The sun on your glistening hair so warm to the touch.
The constant conversations
about totally insignificant subjects.
The clasp of your hand
with your fingers entwined in mine.

Laughing once again at a story
I'd already heard you tell so many times before.
The twinkle in your eyes when you had a secret
you could barely keep from blurting out.
Dancing across the kitchen floor
when we were the only ones that heard the music.

Talking about days gone by and days to come.
Catching your glance from across a room
knowing I was the only one you really saw.
Watching a sunset in complete silence
because there were no words to express
what we saw before us and felt in our hearts.
Knowing we were capturing a moment in time
that could never be relived.

The warmth of your breath, the softness of your kiss,
the embrace that made me melt.
The rhythmic sound of your heart beating
when my head was on your chest.
The sound of your voice as you whispered,
"I love you, too."
