LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY

The Oak Island lighthouse is one of the most recent, being built in the 1950's. The 169 foot tall tower is made of reinforced concrete and looks like a farm silo. The tower has never needed painting since its colors were mixed in with the concrete. The lantern frame and floor are both made of lightweight aluminum.

The Oak Island light marks the entrance to the Cape Fear River.
The light in the tower is an airport beacon.
