LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY
In 1804, Congress authorized the Cape Lookout lighthouse. The first
Cape Lookout cost $20,678 to build and had a very unusual design.
The inner tower was made of brick and the outer of wood.
After
many delays in construction, the tower was finally lit in 1812.
The first tower was 104 feet tall and painted with red and white
stripes. Many skippers had a hard time seeing it, especially at
night. The lighthouse board had a new 156 foot tower put up in 1859.
This one had a first order Fresnel lens. Confederates for Fort Macon
knocked out the lens, but it was replaced with a third order lens.
In 1873,
the tower was painted with the black and white diamond pattern.
