LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY
Construction
of the Hatteras lighthouse was authorized in 1794, but no brick
was laid until late 1799. The light went into service in October
of 1803. In the beginning, no one could see the light. After many
complaints, the lighthouse board ordered the tower raised to 150
feet and was fitted with a first order Fresnel lens.
At the
beginning of the Civil War, the Confederates took the lens and ruined
the light. The Union got the lighthouse up and running again in
June 1862. The light was still not good enough. After the war, the
lighthouse board finally replaced it with a new 193 foot brick tower,
making Hatteras the tallest brick lighthouse in the U.S. The lens
in the new tower was in operation by mid December of 1871. Shortly
after, the old tower was blown up to keep it from falling or damaging
the new one. Sailors agreed that the new lighthouse was much better
than the old one.
Beach
erosion threatened to take Cape Hatteras, so in 2000, it was moved
inland so that it would not fall into the ocean.
