A
tribute to the heirloom quilts designed and appliqued
first
in the Baltimore area in the 1840s and 1850s
Here
are our Baltimore sets stitched into a complete bedroom ensemble.
Here's
the finished bedtable from Tone-onTone, Vol.1!
Baltimore
Album quilts are not just a beauty to behold, they also reveal
a bit of history!
Quilts from that era have locked within each square a story about
its creator.
In the quilts, quite often, the seasons were shown,
as well as significant occasions like engagements,
weddings, births.
In
the quilt above, there is a thread of continuity woven between
the blocks
-- with both color
and quilting stitches.
To achieve an exquisite quilted effect, after you complete the
machine cross stitching,
slide a lowloft fusible batting beneath the hoop.
Finish the design by quilting
with white backstitching.
With this process,
you can make an heirloom quilt in a matter of days instead of
months or years.
Try making a pillow, or frame a selection of quilt blocks to hang
as a grouping.
This
quilt will make a wonderful wedding gift....
just change the white backstitching to silver or gold for special
anniversaries!
**PROJECT
IDEAS**
Here
are our Baltimore sets stitched into a complete bedroom ensemble.
The bedspread features
BOTH volumes of Baltimore Album Quilt Blocks.
The bedspread is just a quiltface with all the edges finished.
It is spread right on top of my comforter,
but hangs lower around the edges so the comforter doesn't show.
In the summer, I'll take the comforter off,
and have the bedspread on with just the sheets.
The
center medallion
of the spread features Baltimore Album Quilt Blocks, Vol.2, stitched
using a 4x4 hoop.
The large pillows
feature designs from
Baltimore Album Quilt Blocks, Vol.1, stitched using a 6x10 hoop.
The neckroll pillows feature designs from BOTH Baltimore sets.
(Neckroll: center designs were stitched with a 6x10 hoop.)
(Neckroll: end designs were stitched with a 4x4 hoop.)
The
wallhanging,
featuring Baltimore Album Quilt Blocks, Vol.1,
is completely quilted by machine and pieced together
by the lap quilting method (aka "quilt-on-the-go" technique).
After the colorful design was cross stitched on muslin,
lowloft cotton batting and medium weight cutaway stabilizer
were slid under the hoop (no re-hooping)
and the white
quilting stitches completed each block.
